Warning on Costume and Tinted Contact Lenses The
American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) is warning wearers of costume and tinted
contact lenses that they should be properly fitted and instructed on how to clean
and care for them. The ability of changes your look through costume and tinted
contact lenses has become very popular. But without proper hygenic care they can
cause serious damage to your cornea.
Many
ophthalmologists are reporting patients who have purchased costume lenses from
beachwear stores and have been unaware of the care that they require. Complications
include bacterial infections, corneal abrasions, corneal ulcers, and allergic
reactions. Other
patients have encountered problems by swimming in their contact lenses, getting
sand on them, or exchanging them with one another. "Ill-fitting lenses
can result in permanent damage to the cornea, and even vision loss," said
Terrence P. O'Brien, MD, associate professor of ophthalmology and director of
ocular infectious diseases at the Wilmer Eye Institute at Johns Hopkins Hospital
in Baltimore. "Contact lenses are medical devices that require specific shape
parameters for proper fit." Additional
problem is the recent trend to share and exchange costume contact lenses. This
is particular true among teenagers. Contact lenses have the potential of passing
harmful bacteria and should never be worn by more then one person. Click
